The Advocate is adding readers at a rate that could more than double its New Orleans subscriber base in a year’s time.
Publisher John Georges appeared at a New Orleans City Council meeting today and reported that the paper is adding 500 new subscribers a week. It isn’t clear from the report that all 500 subscriptions are coming from the New Orleans area, but if they are, and if the rate of new subscriptions is sustained, the paper’s New Orleans circulation would increase from its current 20,000 to around 46,000 by this time next year.
There’s reason to think that the increase could actually be larger than that, since the “New Orleans Advocate” is a work in progress that should appeal to more and more subscribers as it continues to evolve into a truly New Orleans newspaper, something Georges has promised it will do by this Christmas.
“The Advocate feels very loved right now,” Georges said, and several city council members echoed the love with glowing endorsements of his efforts to return a seven-day-a-week newspaper to the New Orleans market.
