The pace of competition for New Orleans newspaper readership quickened yesterday when businessman John Georges completed his acquisition of The Advocate.
Georges immediately named two former Times-Picayune managing editors to senior management positions. Dan Shea will be general manager, and Peter Kovacs will be editor. The appointment of two veteran journalists with a combined total of over thirty years of experience in the New Orleans newspaper market lends credence to the theory that Georges has his eyes set on his hometown as a way of widening The Advocate’s reach and increasing its circulation.
As reported by TheAdvocate.com this morning, Georges “said he was ‘extremely proud’ to own Louisiana’s largest daily newspaper” and “said there are opportunities in [New Orleans] because The Times-Picayune was ‘wounded and confused.’”
